Business case: Optimization of QHSE management system.

In 2013-2014 SimplexUno conducted a comprehensive upgrade of Gülermak Heavy Industries integrated QHSE management system.


Our customer Gülermak Heavy Industries is a leading international construction company and has since its establishment in Ankara in 1958 performed a number of large projects including railways, tunnels and industrial projects, cement factories, sugar mills, glass factories and power plants.

Recently, Gülermak been part of the consortium that built the second stage of the metro in Warsaw, which opened in March 2015.

Gülermak also owns one of the largest steel mills in Turkey with a production capacity of 36,000 tons / year and exports to 35 countries.


Gülermak had an existing HSE management system, which was developed by the company's headquarters in Ankara, mainly for projects in Turkey and the Middle East, as well as their steel plant in Turkey. The system was certified according to ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18000. In connection with its construction of the subway in Warsaw, Gülermak had established a new headquarter for Central and Northern Europe in Warsaw and it was from here the job was done. The employees were mainly Polish, Turkish and Danish engineers. Majority of the staff had no experience with the company's QHSE system.

The task

Gülermak wanted alignment of the management system to comply with future projects in e.g. Denmark and rest of Scandinavia. In particular, they wanted to strengthen the system's environmental component, ie upgrade to ISO 14001 level. This need was clearly related to the company's tender on the metro project Cityringen - Nordhavn in Copenhagen, where environmental standards were very high. The need for improvement of the management system regarding quality, safety and environment was obvious.

The work

Main tasks:

  • Mapping of company processes.
  • Development of new and upgrading of existing policies, objectives and procedures within quality, environment and Health & Safety. This work was done, in close cooperation with management and employees. All documentation was conducted in English.
  • Reconciliation of the management system compliance with ISO standards, regulations and best practices.
  • Training of employees in QHSE-related issues.
